According to statistics around the world the number of seniors 65 years and older is expected to increase. This groups includes my parents which is why this topic is so important to me.  If you are like me, I want to make sure they are enjoying their later years, and pay attention to how they can maintain healthy and active lives.

Here are some tips for healthy living:

1) Keep them active

Encouraging our parents to stay active provides numerous benefits such as reducing the impact of illness and disease, improving mobility, flexibility and balance. An active lifestyle can also improve their sleep, reduce stress and encourage social interactions with likeminded people.

The social support from staying active can enhance their health status greatly. By joining a walking, dancing or biking group they can increase their social network.  It is beneficial to have friends and not only with people their age. It is important to interact with younger people too.  This has a positive effect by discouraging social isolation. Social isolation has been known to a risk factor for poorer general health.

You can also play a role in being active with your parents. It can be a round of golf, a walk around the block, or even dancing/playing a game like they used do for us when we were kids.

2) Healthy Foods

We all know that with age, the body changes. Appetites may decline and absorption of certain nutrients may also decrease. To adapt to changes in our parents it is important they consume a balance of healthy foods.

Encourage our parents to include in their diets:
- Healthy fats - from nuts, avocados, and fatty fish; for the maintenance of good health.
- Fibre and vitamins - from vegetables, fruits and whole grains. These will support digestion and cardiovascular health
- Protein - from beans, eggs, nuts, seeds, and chicken. Protein is needed for muscle and bone support.
-Water -plenty of water and other non-caffeinated beverages.

3) Support with natural products

Speak with you parents and/or their doctors about the changes in your parents health. Some products can benefit their health concerns related to cardivascular system the brain, the joints and the eyes.

Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oils are needed for the maintenance of good health, and also help support cardiovascular and brain health. These essential fatty acids have been shown to reduce serum triglycerides, promote healthy mood balance, and may be used in conjunction with conventional therapy, to help reduce the pain of rheumatoid arthritis in adults [1].

Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant needed for the maintenance of good health and helps maintain and/or support cardiovascular health [2].

Calcium supplementation, in combination with sufficient vitamin D intake, may reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis, in addition to a healthy diet and regular exercise [3].

Glucosamine helps relieve joint pain associated with osteoarthritis. It also helps protect against the deterioration of cartilage [4].

Lutein and zeaxanthin help reduce the risk of developing cataracts. They also maintain eyesight in conditions such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration [5].

4) Regular checkups

Have your parents see their health care practitioner or doctor regularly to have check-ups. Early detection of health issues is so important in prevention and treatments of diseases.

5) Keep their minds sharp

Ask our them what they used to enjoy when they were young and (if safe) do it again!  Whether it's going to a concert, travelling, painting, or dancing, enjoy the excitment.  Or else try something new, whether it is learning a new language or improving computer skills, ongoing education is a great way to keep their minds sharp.

We all want our parents to live healthy and vibrant lives!
