Natvd Article Series - A Look At Cancer E-mail

There are many different opinions on the usefulness of vitamins and natural supplements in the battle against cancer; some in favour, some not. Ultimately, it is up to each person individually to decide if they want to incorporate natural products into their diet and lifestyle to help prevent and treat cancer.

In this 4-part article series, we look at a number of different natural supplements and their possible benefits against cancer.

Part 1: Vitamin D

"Evidence of a possible cancer-protective role for vitamin D was also found in laboratory studies of the effect of vitamin D treatment on cancer cells in culture. In these studies, vitamin D promoted the differentiation and death (apoptosis) of cancer cells, and it slowed their growth and reproduction."

Part 2: Carotenoids

"Carotenoids are colourful organic pigments that are naturally occurring in plants and some other organisms, like algae. They are what gives both ripe fruit and fall leaves their bright colours. People consuming diets rich in carotenoids from natural foods, such as fruits and vegetables, are healthier and have lower mortality from a number of chronic illnesses."

Part 3: Lutein

"Lutein is found in the eyes, particularly in the macula and the lens, where it protects the eye from macular degeneration, helps to absorb damaging blue light, quench singlet oxygen and inhibit lipid peroxidation. Studies on Lutein have linked it to several different types of cancer, including lung, breast and colon cancer as well as melanoma."

Part 4: Reishi Mushroom Extract

"Studies of Reishi in cancer research have been largely conducted in Japan, where Reishi was scientifically proven to have an anti-tumor effect, and it is commonly used as part of cancer treatment programs. In addition to being tumor-suppressive and helping prevent spread of cancer, Reishi can help protect against some of the negative side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, specifically bone marrow suppression, loss of appetite, fatigue and risk of infection."
